Martha Stewart Meets Mystery Science Theater
Martha Stewart has been searching for a way to stay alive. Stewart continues to struggle on how to continue to grow her empire and to even keep it strong. She knows that she must reach a younger audience. Martha’s audience has aged along with her and she is in desperate need to young blood. She attempted a “young, hip” magazine and it was doomed from the start. She continues to expand her website with informative videos and even began her own blog. But, how do you get younger people to embrace Martha? You slice her up and roast her of course.
Beginning September 16 on Fine Living, Whatever Martha! will begin. This is Martha Stewart meets Mystery Science Theater. The idea actually came from Martha herself, one night when she couldn’t sleep she saw old episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000. In case you missed out on the cult hit, the show was centered around a spaceship crew—a man and his quick-witted robots—who were given old, campy horror movies to watch. As they watched they gave hilarious commentary…it was funny, fresh and creative. Exactly the mix Martha needs to reach a younger demographic.
Her daughter, Alexis Stewart and her partner in crime, Jennifer Koppleman Hutt, will be the ones dissecting reruns of her shows from the 90’s. These women are no stranger to commentary. They co-host a show on Sirius Satellite Radio where they talk about EVERYTHING.
From Brooks Barnes of The New York Times:
…they have developed a strong following for their blunt, often raunchy, take on various lifestyle issues.
Along with their running commentaries, the two women occasionally try to complete tasks that Martha Stewart demonstrates in the old episodes. Predictably, Alexis Stewart has little trouble keeping up, while Ms. Koppelman Hutt, whose skills do not include cooking or cleaning, stumbles along as the everywoman.
“In one episode, Martha is showing people how to properly whittle a twig to roast a marshmallow,” said Ms. Koppelman Hutt. “That is screamingly funny. The woman is actually whittling a twig. I mean, who does that?”
Alexis Stewart, on the other hand, defended her mother. “We always whittled at our house,” she responded. “What’s so unusual about that?”
I have always loved Martha, partly due to the fact that every-time I watch her I am always thinking, “Yeah, right…..” I love imagining that I live in a Martha Stewart World because in real life not only my life, but myself are so far removed from it.
Again, Whatever Martha! begin September 16th on the Fine Living channel. Check your local listings.
