Top Chef Season 4: From Block Parties to Movies
Ok, I have just caught up on the last two episodes of Top Chef and my only comments are…not surprising and quite clever.
So far, I think that this group of chefs have had some great Quickfires and Challenges. I am continually amazed that some of these people complain about things like refining a taco. Lee Anne I think nailed it by writing, “So, what if it bugs you, don’t you want to win $100k?” These people I am sure are only a couple of episodes away from making a French Classic dish from ingredients they find on the cereal isle or a main course from the vending machine. The challenges have been very creative and I would think that most chefs would be excited because they would have a lot of leeway to really showcase what they can do.
During the block party I could not comprehend that an entire team would simply brush aside the judges and say that they were cooking for the crowd, not the judges. Now, I live in a fairly average neighborhood without very few discernable palates roaming the streets, but good food is just that, good food. Admittedly, you have to cater a little to the younger set, but if you are making kid friendly food than at least do it well. I was none too surprised that Erik left. Seems like a great guy, probably is a great chef, but you could tell that he hated every minute of being there. I really think that Erik hated someone controlling what he could and couldn’t do. He hated the rules and restrictions. He likes to be in charge. As I seem to say every year….”Did you ever watch this show?”
This week was incredibly clever. I am sure that they must have been very nervous about showing off their culinary techniques in front of Daniel Boulud in the Quickfire.
The Elimination Challenge though was fantastic. I was even thinking what movie I would choose. Boulud actually named one of my favorites, Casablanca. Everyone I think did well in choosing their movie, some just faltered a little on the whole concept of the challenge. I admit, I wasn’t sure how team “A Christmas Story” was going to make-out, but they pulled it off. My heart goes out to Manuel. The poor guy. He really needed to be a stronger personality. Spike took over and picked “Good Morning, Vietnam” because he makes vietnamese food. Now, Maunel was heading to Mexico, but his choice of movie was incredible. Like Water for Chocolate is a great movie and a celebration of the seduction and passion of food in our lives. In the end, he didn’t stand-up for himself and paid the price.
