Michelin Rates Ramsay and Colicchio

by Tracey Thompson on October 9th, 2007

The Michelin Stars are probably the biggest deal to restaurants, chefs and foodies around the world.  Our knew Top Chef, Hung was complimented about his duck being a 3 star dish and they even were part of the story behind the Summer movie, Ratatouille

The tires and guide are one in the same.  Michelin tires are actually from France and the company came about from two brothers who started out in the rubber business and bicycles.  One of the brothers, Andre’, published the first guide book to help travelers navigate the good and bad along the roads in France, the rest, as they say, is history.

The new editions for the Michelin guides will be out in November and a few additions and subtractions are already being debated.  Head Judge of Top Chef, Tom Colicchio had his one star for Craft taken away and bad boy, Gordon Ramsay received 2 stars for his restaurant in New York City.  Michelin started rating New York Restaurants three years ago and this year will have guides for Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas.

Jennifer Ablan from Reuters:

Michelin, which only expanded coverage to the United States in 2005, will publish new guides next month for Los Angeles and Las Vegas eateries. It also rates hotels.

British chef Ramsay gained renown with his television series “Hell’s Kitchen” and his frequent use of the f-word. His midtown Manhattan restaurant is styled on his flagship restaurant Gordon Ramsay, the only London restaurant given top marks of three stars by the Michelin guide.

The 2008 guide praised Ramsay’s $120, seven-course Menu Prestige, saying, “You’ll find yourself sampling everything from velvety foie gras and striped bass with caviar veloute to a fluffy apricot souffle.”

The three New York restaurants that received three stars in the 2008 guide were the same from the previous year: Jean Georges, Le Bernardin and Per Se.

The Michelin Rating System has been around Europe for 100 years and with that has always come controversy.  One less star does not mean a bad place, it just did not measure-up to the secretive standards of the nameless inspectors.
