Martha Stewart Behind Bars

The last couple of weeks have been anything but interesting. Our family is taking turns getting sick and last week was my turn to spend a couple of days lounging on the couch.
As I sat there feeling blah and mentally ill-equipped to handle too much, I stumbled across “Martha Behind Bars” on The Lifetime Channel. It was a nice, mindless diversion.
“Martha Behind Bars” came out in 2005 on the heels of Miss Stewart’s incarceration and soon after the successful TV movie “Martha, Inc.” Most critics loved “Martha, Inc.” and most notably Cybill Shepherd’s portrayal of the Homemaking Diva. She continued to do an amazing job in “Behind Bars” though the made-for-TV movie fell a little flat.
I enjoyed both movies, a guilty pleasure. I am a Martha fan, and feel that although the movie may appear to be a little harsh, it makes me love her more. Martha Stewart has worked long and hard to get where she is and in a small part is an allusion. I know that I will never be “a Martha Stewart” and I don’t feel bad about it. I love living in the illusion that I too will one day lead the Martha life: keep my house immaculate, knit my sweaters, entertain my friends with an incredible dinner party, reupholster my couch, make cookies with my children and have them help me re-decorate their rooms. None of this will happen, but I love the dream. It is comparable to standing in front of the bathroom mirror with my stick of deodorant rehearsing my Oscar winning speech for Best Actress.
Cybill Shepherd is great as Martha. She is stern and cold, but lovable in a respectful way. If you have a chance, take a look at either “Martha Behind Bars” or “Martha, Inc.”
