Top Chef, Season 3: Episode 9

Being that it was Tuesday night and I had yet to see the Top Chef episode from last week, I thought I better “Watch what happens”. I almost wish that I hadn’t bothered.
I am a Tre fan and I am, in a word, “bummed”. From day 1, Tre has done not only a great job with his culinary skills but he is a true professional. He never once got his feathers ruffled, he took criticism well and was dignified to the end. I truly thought that he would make it to at least the final four. But as the episode unraveled, we all could see the writing on the wall.
I have a new respect for Sara. She did an incredible job taking charge in the kitchen and handled Howie exceptionally well. Hung has finally come back around. He did a great job working with his team, on his dish and boy howdy, did you seem him hack-up those chickens!!!! Even Tom C. was amazed. It was nice to see his knife skills finally get the work-out they deserve.
Oh, and speaking of knife skills….Casey? Can you truly be that bad at cutting an onion? I was in shock. To be honest, I still am. I see the writing on the wall for yet another of our chefs…Casey the gods are not shining down on you and your time has possibly come.
Good news is that I think Tre will be fine. According to Anthony Bourdain:
For the many who, like me, found themselves depressed by Tre’s exit, console yourself with the certain knowledge that of almost all the Top Chef contestants, past and present, few are as well suited for the real business of being a “top chef”. He has the character. He has the skills. He lacks only, perhaps, the inspiration. And he is well on his way in that department. Last I heard, Tre was trailing at some excellent NYC restaurants. He keeps that up, he shall surely, someday, rule the world.

I heard a rumour that part of Casey’s problem was that her knife was dull, but still — as a chef it’s your responsibility to sharpen your knives at the end of the night so they’re ready for the next day. Sara wow’ed me as well. Curious to see how it all plays out.
