The Next Food Network Star 3: Episode 6

 This week on The Next Food Network Star we lost are fun-loving and hyper-active Paul McCoullough.

The challenge was as Alton Brown called it, “Iron Chef Junior”.  Paul was really out of his element and it showed.  The challenge was in two parts.  One was to come up with three dishes in an hour by using a secret ingredient and the second part was to work as a commentator.

They paired up Amy with Jag and Rory with Paul.  Amy and Jag cooked with chicken and Rory and Paul had striped bass.  Amy, Rory and Paul did well with their dishes, but Amy came out on top with the judges.  They feel that her food never missed a step.  Jag surprised everyone by sinking bad.  He tried to keep the recipes simple for the home cook and in doing so, made three horrible dishes.  I felt so bad for him, because he was devastated.  He knew that he could have done much better, but was so hung-up with trying to keep it simple, he lost the flavor.  It was obvious that Jag has a passion for food and I believe that is what kept him there this week.

During the second part of the challenge they each had to give commentary, food information and banter with Alton Brown, like on the Iron Chef.  This is where Paul fell apart.  He does not have culinary training and it shows.  His food knowledge was minimal and he was bad at faking it.  Rory was not good either.  She really didn’t know a lot and was attempting to be cute with her banter, but forgot that this is a show about food…you need to know it and keep the focus there.

Amy and Jag did great with their commentary.  They both know a lot about food and if they didn’t know the answer they understood how to work it.  I think that the big surprise was Amy.  She not only made great food, but did incredible on camera.  I guess she needed that meltdown last week to get her stuff together.

We are now down to three:  Amy, Jag and Rory.  So, who do you think will be the Next Food Network Star?
