Next Food Network Star 3: Episode 5

Next Food Network Star: Adrien

I was amazed at what a downward spiral all the contestants took this week.  I guess that the pressure is getting to them.

The challenges this week were good, but I really think that these are a little tough for just about anyone.  The first challenge had the 5 finalists draw spoons with a variety of ingredients written on them.  They had 30 minutes to come up with a dish and cook it, after which they had to give a 3 minute presentation of their dish.  The main challenge was to come up with a dish using their least favorite ingredient and give a 5 minute presentation.  The first challenge I thought would have been difficult for just about anyone.  Not the dish, but the on-camera segment.  They had to fly by the seat of their pants, and I think that if you took any of the Food Network Celebrities from back in their novice camera days, most of them would have struggled.

The main challenge I thought was great in that it really showed what they were capable to do…and they all bombed.  I know nerves had gotten to them, but they really should have gotten past that.  They had quite a bit of time to come up with a script and verbally practice.  They all got flustered…and that even means you Adrien.  I was the most surprised with Adrien.  I think because not only did the lack of culinary knowledge show, but what he probably does not realize is that they were expecting better from him.  Adrien has a local cooking show, he is used to the camera, but he was really off and awkward.  I wonder if he saw the segment afterwards, because he just did lousy.  I figured that he had the kiss of death, when during the episode they kept showing clips of him talking about how the on-camera segments were so easy for him and he would obviously continue.  I think that was part of his problem with the judges. It was obvious how clueless he was on how much work he really needed in front of the camera.

Amy really got on my nerves this week.  I know she missed her family, but please!  The little show in front of the judges just rubbed me the wrong way.  People are debating what that was all about.  Simple.  She wanted the judges to say “oh, no don’t feel that way….keep strong…blah, blah.”  She wanted validation and when they just coldly and pointedly asked her if she would just like to leave and be eliminated, she abruptly back-peddled.

At this point, I am at a complete loss for who is going to win.  Paul is good, but he needs to tone down and focus.  I think that he is a little over-the-top for most.  Jag is a great Chef, but he needs to get better with the camera and become more user friendly.  I don’t know if he gets it.  Rory is ok, but I am just not that impressed and Amy…one of my early favorites…seems incapable of really getting a good relationship with the camera. I think that the judges nailed it, do they really have the Next Food Network Star in front of them.

Next week should be interesting.  The Iron Chefs are coming out.  That should tell the men from the boys…or girls…or what have you.
