Top Chef, Season 3: Episode 1

Top Chef..Clay

 Clay

Top Chef, Season 3 is aiming to please this season.  Most of the contestants seem to be incredible chefs and the premier episode was interesting, fun and was about not only the would-be Top Chefs, but also about the food.

They started out in the mansion once owned by Versace in South Beach.  They thought they were going to have some time to chow and size-up their competition, but…oh, no…in walked Tom and Padma.  The quickfire compensated, using the ingredients they were being served they had to make a amuse bouche…one mouthful of food that tasted great and explained their culinary point of view.  We saw immediately that Clay was probably not ready for Top Chef…he didn’t know what a amuse bouch was.

The challenge was working with unfamiliar food to most.  Boar, alligator, sea urchin, eel even rattlesnake were the ingredients at hand.  They had to come up with a dish with components probably most had never even tasted and to add to the pressure, they had a guest judge…Anthony Bourdain.

Tre and Hung both hit it out of the park and showed that they are probably the strong ones in the competition. They didn’t sweat it and both could probably do their magic with any ingredient thrown a them.  Hung was one of the last to get to choose his protein, so he had duo of geoduck and black chicken…yeah…I use that every day.  Tre made an incredible dish with ostrich and abalone.

Clay sadly had to say good-bye.  His food didn’t go over well and his lack of experience was obvious.  He was a nice guy.  Clay was probably the first contestant that I actually felt a little sad for.  His dad was a chef that committed suicide when he was young…talk about depressing.  Well, hopefully life will come together for him.

Anthony Bourdain was great, and actually a good critic.  He called it as he saw it.  He was impressed with what Hung did and the taste/presentation of Tre’s could not be beat.  Howie from Miami learned a lot this episode and is very lucky that he didn’t get eliminated.  He moved slow and insisted that he was fine on time…and then even though the dishes were prepared, he didn’t get both plated.  Wow, is he lucky that the one dish he had on the plate was good.  It will be interesting to see if he redeems himself next time.

Don’t miss the next episode of Top Chef, Season 3, Wednesday night at 10pm EST on Bravo.
