Drinking Wine in the Summer

I think most of us amateur wine drinkers don’t really think too much about wine seasonally. We drink what we drink when we drink it…or something like that.
Anthony Giglio from Epicurious brings up some good points though:
If thinking about wines seasonally seems beside the point — the point being to drink wine often, and without pretension — consider lemonade. How often do you pour yourself a glass of homemade, hand-squeezed lemonade in the middle of February? Not too often, eh? Which is the point. Mouthwatering acidity and ripe, fresh fruits taste more refreshing when the temperature rises. At the peak of summer, enophiles shift gears from the heavy reds and rich whites to lighter, crisper wines that refresh the palate. Think crisp, citrus- and herb-scented whites that go down like — you guessed it — lemonade, paired with grilled fish and summer vegetables. Fruity reds, at their best lightly chilled, are perfect with giant grilled steaks and barbecued meats — yes, even better than beer. They’re ideal for when you want to raise a glass with dad for Father’s Day, toast an outdoor wedding, or pop a cork to celebrate our Independence — or France’s. After all, we learned a good deal of what we know about wine from them.
Anthony brings us a variety of suggestions for the various events occurring in June. Whether it be a 4th of July BBQ where he offers up red, white and pink. American medium-bodied Pinot Noirs, full Cabernets, and citrusy Sauvignon Blancs. How about a Petit Syrah or Shiraz for Dad this Father’s Day.
