Wedding Registry Essentials

Wedding Season has arrived…I just recently discovered that such a thing exists. So, if you or someone you know is getting together their gift registry, or you know that your friend has forgotten to register for some vital kitchen equipment, I have discovered a great source.
Who better to help than the editor’s over at Epicurious, publishers of Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines.
Here are the editors picks for Wedding Registry Kitchen Essentials:
1. Standing Mixer. I would get at least a 7 quart. There is a large variety, everywhere from Cuisinart to Kitchen-Aide. I prefer the Kitchen-Aide Artisan.
2. Blender. Remember you get what you pay for. You want a blender that can crush ice and stand the test of time. They suggest the Liquid Blu from Hamilton Beach. At 800 watts it is the highest of consumer lines.
3. Chef’s Knife. You are looking at an 8 inch top of the line Chef’s knife. Wusthof, Kershaw and Furi are some of the most popular. Go to the Food Network Store to see what your favorite celebrity chef uses.
4. Saute pan. A good 12″ is one of the work horses of the kitchen.
5. Stock Pot. Think large and heavy duty. They suggest a 5-ply heavy gauge stock pot from Viking. It includes a pasta strainer and steamer basket.
6. Roaster Pan. A non-stick roaster pan with rack from All-Clad that will help prepare and serve the first Thanksgiving turkey will be worth it.
7. Espresso Machine. I personally wouldn’t bother with this unless you actually drink espresso and cappuccinos. I put one on my register with some cups and saucers and used it once. My husband is a coffee drinker and I never used it enough. Think about if you would ever really use it, or if you’d rather go to the local coffee shop and have someone make it for you (that would be me). Maybe a nice coffee machine would serve you better.
8. Food Processor. The editor’s at Epicurious actually had a fusion blender which can do both blend and process. I find that most of those can’t hold a lot to process. I prefer having two separate items. I don’t use the food processor a lot, but when I do use it, it gets a work-out. I also like a small 2-cup processor that I have. I use it a lot.
9. Time Scale. This is a great idea and I would love to have this. It is from Salter Housewares. When you are not using it to weigh food, it hangs on the wall and tells you the time. (Pictured above).
10. Melon Seeder and Scoop. This would be fun to put in a basket with a bunch of fun, clever, unique and useful kitchen gadgets. Just remember to think useful. I have someone who gives me gadgets that I will never use and that tend to only work so-so. Within a couple of months they always hit the yard sale.
11. Remote Cabinet Locks. Good idea for maybe moms-to-be, but I don’t know about brides-to-be. Made from Smallbone.
12. Silicone Chocolate Paddle. This is an ingenious idea. If you are a baker or candy maker, this would be great. It is a paddle to stir your chocolate and it has a temperature gauge on it so you can stir and check temperature at the same time.
13. Grill. My husband would have been in 7th heaven if we had gotten this for a wedding present. Of course, if you have a friend or family member that has the money to buy you a top-of-the-line outdoor grill, would you adopt me??
14. Trash Can. This isn’t just any trash can. It is a really cool trash can. The Rectangular Can Sensor knows when you are there to pop-up its lid. That is something that should keep all the grooms very entertained.
There is the Epicurious Editor’s Pick of Wedding Registry Essentials. I question some of them. But it is a fun list and gets you thinking about what you want and need.
My best advice is to think about it before you go and do a little research. It is very easy to get laser gun happy as you tour the stores and build you registry. Just think about what you will use and what you really like.
