Vermi-Composting to Get Rid of Your Kitchen Scraps

I have been trying to get myself motivated to start a small garden. I thought that it would be a great way to get herbs and maybe a nice thing to try and do with my two young sons.
Martha recently discussed Vermi-Composting. Vermi are worms. It seemed like a simple idea and it may end up being another fun thing to do with my sons. What could be better than worms and dirt!
If you click here it will take you to the link on Martha Stewart. I suggest though to do a little more research, because as I started reading more, I discovered that there are some definite “Do’s and Dont’s“ when it comes to vermi-composting.
You need to watch the temperature that you keep the worms at, you don’t know it too hot or too cold. You need to avoid fatty foods. It is best to stick with things like leftover vegetables, fruits and eggshells. Fatty foods tend to attract flies, rodents and make it smell. You also need to be careful if you are putting this outside. The more I read the more I discover rodents can end up being a problem. That is probably why Martha has it in a bin that you keep inside. I recomment to take the time and do a little research before you start.
A couple of great sites are Wikipedia, Garden Web Forums or read “Worms Eat My Garbage” or ”The Worm Book“ available at Amazon.

I would also worry about rats and bugs getting attracted by it.

Yes. I think that you would have to be very careful. Martha has you storing the bin in the house, but I would be be worry about ants.
