Watch What You Eat to Prevent Cancer

by Tracey Thompson on April 5th, 2007

There was an interesting segment on the Today Show regarding what you eat and preventing cancer.

The overall message was to eat your fruits and vegetables.  You should eat at least 5 servings but try to make it 9.  That may sound a little difficult, but Joy Bauer, a Today Show contributor and nutritionist, made it seem a little more simple. Have some fruit twice a day…for example, having a banana for a snack and an apple for another snack.  Then have 1 and 1/2 cups of veggies at lunch and again at dinner.  Make it variety.

With the do’s there were some don’ts, but a part of me is skeptical about some of this.  One recommendation was to not cook meat at high temperature.  That means no grilling:

Roasting and baking produce fewer HCAs, and poaching, stewing, or boiling meat produce the least. I recommend limiting your intake of red meat altogether (aim for no more than 3 times each week), and cut back on your consumption of meat cooked at high heat. When you do grill steak,…. just be sure to trim excess fat, flip often, and cut off charred or burnt parts of food before eating them (you may also want to cook meat slightly in the microwave or oven first, to lessen high-temperature cooking time).

OK. This is where I have to draw the line.  YUCK!!  I know that I do not truly understand the science, but I think that you could probably make just about any connection to something that causes someone cancer.  I think that some of this is a little fear mongering.

Simple, don’t sit down with a slab of bacon and a over-sized plate of chili-cheese fries.  When it comes to food, eat healthy, eat well and in moderation.  That should help take obesity, overall health and hopefully cancer.
