Katonah’s Satirist and the Marthometer

Bill Tisherman a local writer has begone a satirical newsletter, The Marthometer, to show his disdain for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia’s attempt to trademark his town’s name, Katonah.
The newsletter is dedicated to lampooning Martha Stewart, even down to a fake advertisement for t-shirts with “Katonah, or the furniture formerly known as a village.” According to Bill Tisherman this is to stand tough against corporate greed, and I am sure to annoy Ms. Stewart endlessly.
According to the Journal News, Ron Romanowicz, from the Katonah Chamber of Commerce, thinks that this is much ado about nothing:
“I see MSLO’s attempt to trademark her line of furniture as normal business procedure,” Romanowicz said. “This is a multimillion-dollar corporation that wants to protect its intellectual property.”
Martha Stewart ended up cancelling a book signing in the area and MSLO has no comment about Bill Tisherman, the Marthometer newsletter or the possible upcoming court battle.
The town leaders have until April 15th to make the decision whether to challenge the trademark. They say that they will make that decision by April 11th.

I just want you to know that I think one heck of a lot of Martha Stewart. Can’t figure why you find it so enjoyable to put her down when a good many of your buddies and cronies have probably done one heck of a lot more than she ever did. She may have gone to prison, so what? She went in with class and she came out with class. Why don’t you get a life before someone decides to take potshots at you?

I think the town should trademark the name. Then, they would own it, and this wouldn’t be an issue. If Martha Stewart and her company, or anyone else, wanted to use the name, they could simply ask the town for permission.
This would also give the town control as to how their name is used.
