Thanksgiving Turkey Tips

Thanskgiving Turkey Tips

Only a few days away from Thanksgiving, and my guess is that most of us are just now starting to finalize our menus.

Besides the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Pie and Football games in Dallas and Detroit, the turkey is one of the most anticipated traditions of the day.  That said, it is probably one of the most stressed over.

You want your turkey to be perfect because that will be the only protein you get all day and their is nothing worse than 15 lbs of dried out leftover turkey.

So what is the best cooking method?  I have read and watched everything from Betty Crocker to Martha Stewart and just about every chef over on the Food Network.  There is a variety of methods, thoughts and recipes.  At this point is just about choosing one and taking the plunge.

I will say that one recipe I have tried in the past is from Emeril Lagasse (Cranberry Glazed Turkey) and it was incredible.  The only problem is that he had you brine it in the refrigerator over night and I just do not have pot or refrigerator big enough.  But with a little Macgyver action I modified and adapted. The turkey ended up incredible.

So, are you stuck without many ideas or confused about how to keep your turkey juicy and looking beautiful?  There are some great websites to check-out for some basics.

Food network has a “host” of ideas, recipes and tips.  Currently on their main page they have links to various things regarding turkey.  One of those will be very useful to just about everyone is “Top Ten Turkey Tips”, but if you have the time, take a look at all the information and maybe check-out some of the variations of all the traditional recipes.

Another great site is at Epicurious.com.  They have a Turkey School with tips and information regarding buying, prepping and cooking your turkey along with lots of other good advice.

Cooks Illustrated also has a Turkey Q & A along with 10 Top Thanksgiving Cooking Disasters to avoid and ways to possibly fix them.

Of course, I think probably the premiere source for all you turkey questions and dilemmas is the place that knows their turkey and has been doing it for years, Butterball.  The have FAQ, How To Videos, recipes for your turkey and sides.  And remember that they are available on Thanksgiving Day for questions and turkey dilemmas at 1-800-BUTTERBALL.

Well, I think all the sites I have mentioned will give you more than enough turkey information.  I think the best advice I can give, is don’t lose sight about what the day is about.  Don’t worry if everything isn’t perfect (you are bound to have one disaster), solicit the help of guests and enjoy the process of preparing for your feast.

Have a great weekend and Happy Thanksgiving.
