Top Chef Season 2: Premier Episode

Top Chef Season 2 Premieres

I just finished watching the Season 2 premier of Top Chef on Bravo.  Thank the Heavens for the DVR.

It was interesting.  To be honest, I am not quite sure what I think.  I wasn’t too surprised to see Suyai Steinhaur, the the British New York transplant, be the first to go.  When you are crying at the very first challenge, you know they have no chance of surviving.

The episode lacked a little luster, but I think that I have to watch a couple of other episodes to get to know the cast…oh, I mean contestants.  You have to feel invested in their lives, successes and failures.

I have been reading the various reviews and I think that Jaclyn Levy from the Daily Colonial said it best.  Top Chef is a great reality show because the competitors actually do have to have talent.  They are not just any Joe off the street who entered the casting call.  Unfortunately, unlike the successful Project Runway, many viewers may have a hard time understanding the skilled techniques and you can’t taste the food.  So, you have to really get to know the personalities early on to turn the dial and watch each week.

As the remaining kinks work themselves out and the show establishes a permanent aesthetic, someone is on their way to becoming the next Top Chef–all is ask is the in between producer’s plotting, we see enough of each individual to actually care.

Stay tuned next week for the next episode of Top Chef Season 2, Wednesday night on Bravo.

15 is a lot of personalities to get to know and care about. But what a bunch of characters they’re turning out to be! And by “character” I don’t mean they have any. Are you finding any of them likable yet?
