Hell’s Kitchen Serves a Double Dose

Hell's Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen served up a double dose of attitudes, screams, tears, flames and shame on Monday night.  Each team has lost a player.  Polly went out early on the women’s team due to her lack of knowledge, and Gabe burned out for the men because he couldn’t seem to keep it all together.

This is my first time around with Hell’s Kitchen and for now the jury is out.  My first impression is disappointment.  We are not learning much about our wannabe chef’s actual capabilities.  We just see a Big Brother like scenario in the house, a lot of screaming from our feared leader and I haven’t quite decided what exactly Gordon Ramsay’s two Sous chefs, Scott and Mary Anne are supposed to be doing. It seems that their mission is not to lend guidance to our teams but rather to be an extension of the hands of torture of “Chef”.

The spotlights and red carpet leading what are obviously actors to their tables at the Hell’s Kitchen “restaurant” is a little much, but one only needs to watch for about 15 minutes before seeing the Fox formula:  High made-up drama and little substance.  Could you imagine what TV viewers would be offered if they got to see Kenneth Lee from Top Chef fame go toe-to-toe with Gordon Ramsay.  Now, that would be interesting television.

Well, I will keep up watching.  I am rooting for the women, especially Heather.  The show may be a little (hmm…a little?) obnoxious, but the prize is amazing.  We will see if it starts reeling me in like all these shows end up doing.  Until next week…if you can’t stand the heat, you will never survive Hell’s Kitchen.
