Top Chef: Episode 10 “Reunion”

by Tracey Thompson on May 11th, 2006

As reunion shows go, Top Chefthe Top Chef reunion was mostly uneventful with a dash of tears and some redemption thrown in, oh, and lets not forget to add the two chefs taking to the mat for some added spice.

Our suspicions were confirmed that Miss Tiffani was not only a backstabber but also a saboteur.  With burners and ovens being tampered with during some of the challenges, it was safe to say that someone was playing the part of gremlin in the kitchen and it was really easy to surmise who that person was when Tiffani was the only one attempting to offer an explanation for the incidents.  Her reason…that it was a new kitchen and people were confused.  Oh, yeah…the professional chefs didn’t know how to turn on an oven…right.  The tears were a nice touch.  After this show is over, I know of a few people in Washington DC who could use her skills…and not the culinary ones.

I think that the only real surprise was Stephen Asprinio proving many people wrong.  Not only did he not where a suit (we were all beginning to think he showered in that thing), but he apologized to Candice Kumai for his behaviour towards her, gave her some kudos and then, wow…admitted he was wrong.  That was pretty impressive, but it was not quite as amazing as the Sommelier almost taking down the Irishman.  I think we all understand why Kenneth Lee was gone so quickly…he is S-C-A-R-Y.  Our judges even seemed to have a little horror in their eyes.

Next week the winner will be unveiled.  Will it be our conniving redhead, our hyper-emotional gay guy or our mild mannered cook?  Stay tuned next week for the chilling conclusion of Top Chef.

Ya know, Stephen really started to grow on me on the few episodes before he was kicked off(plus I loved all the wine “education”!). Last night he was surprisingly charming as well.
Looking forward to your thoughts on next week. Me, I’m voting for Harold.

Watching the reunion rerun now. Stephen swigging champagne from the bottle is classy.

The show was edited to show him as a pompous ass, but I agree he’s far more charming on the Reunion.

I thought Dave and Brian were so annoying on the reunion show. Dave is so full of his righteous inidignation — it’s just tired. Tiffani is a backstabbing bitch and I liked that last night (the first part of the finale) she admitted to learning something from seeing herself on TV. I think Stephen also learned a lesson and I’m happy about that. I would love this show to end with Harold the winner as I think he has always taken the high road.
As for everyone’s shock about Top Chef not being about the food — was Project Runway about the clothes? Not until the finale. The rest of the challenges — most were quite ridiculous. When will it ever come in handy to know how to make a dress out of plants?
Anyway, I’m excited to watch next week and see Harold’s triumph (I hope).

I’ve never seen Tom Colicchio with such fear in his eyes as when Ken was ranting. Funny stuff. Apparently this bunch likes getting liquored up, and the show creators didn’t seem to mind using alcohol as a way to add some Jerry Springer to what could have been a sappy reunion.
Whats the deal with Brian? He looked like Prince with all that makeup. All he needed was a figure skater costume and he would have been complete. Somebody needs to tell Cynthia to wear a hat when cooking, I imagine her food was full of blonde hairs since her long locks were hanging down in front of her face. Stephen was awesome. I’ve known a few friends like that, who were downright boring until you get about 3 or more ounces of liquor in their gut. Too bad stephen never hooked up with Candice, he could have taught here a bit about cooking and how to be more assertive. Brian was just creepy, doing his “ooh baby you so sexy” stuff around Candice.

Overall, a decent show but it had no cooking! They should have done a fun cook competition or something like that.
