Top Chef Episode 9: Farewell Lee Anne Wong
I often wonder why so many people, my self included, are addicted to “Reality” TV. For example, you have a show like Top Chef, that has a great concept but failed in its execution…but you still have to watch. What is even more maddening is that when you have seen one episode, you have to keep watching. So, why are we all so addicted? I call it ”Rubber Necking Reality TV”.
I compare it to that car crash on the side of the road. The one that everyone has to slow down to look at. You have seen accidents before, but you still have the urge to peek. Admit it. Not one of us goes by with not at least taking a glance and “wondering what exactly happened over there?”
Even though I have my criticisms about Top Chef, what I love about these type of “Reality” shows, are that the people involved are doing more then just looking for their 15 minutes…they actually have to have some talent beyond conspiring, good looks and psychosis to win.
With Top Chef you have everyone from the hip foodie artists to the professional. From the culinary astute to those of us who just like to pretend. All of us have one thing in common. We love to watch talented people be forced to rise to the occasion, oh, and we probably have a love affair with our TV or DVR.
So, Wednesday night, we watched our car wreck in complete devastation and shock. I was close to needing CPR, but probably not more than our dear, sweet, talented
Lee Anne Wong. You always know that when they edit the show with everyone talking about how they want that person to make it to the end with them…that our beloved heroine is doomed. I saw it coming, but kept hoping that it would not be Lee Anne who we left at the side of the road.
We all thought that it would be our overly emotional Dave Martin who would go careening off course, but as I am beginning to believe what is true Dave style…he navigated on through. I was sure that as soon as the white truffles and wine came out for the challenge we would see Stephen bounding through the doors (do you think he would have given a gastronomic history lesson to our elite panel?)
Unfortunately, as is the MO for all reality shows, we have to say good-bye in the end to a crowd favorite who is talented and full of integrity, so to make room in the final showdown for the aggressive “good tv” character who in the end will not win, but will help with the ratings. What do you think, Dave vs. Tiffani: knives at 20 paces?? Fortunately, for Lee Anne Wong, she already has an incredible career that has no where to go but up.
It is now down to three. I am sure we each have our favorite…GO HAROLD!! But as we all know, there can only be one Top Chef. Stay tuned next Wednesday night for “The Reunion” and in two weeks America’s Top Chef will be named!!

I was sorry to see Lee Anne go. I would have loved to see her go to Las Vegas with Harold and Dave. While I find Dave’s constant whining annoying, I think Tiffani is equally unwatchable with her superior attitude.
I think Harold is the clear winner.

I think Lee Anne definitely deserved to be on the Top 3, along with Harold and Tiffani.
Bravo figured that audiences needed to see drama and crying and backstabbing. Yep, Lee Anne kept her morals in tact, which is probably why she was eliminated.
I’m sure Lee Anne will continue to have a bright career in the future. Her hard working, stick to it with your heart made this Asian proud!
