Del Posto Arrives!

by foodie on December 19th, 2005

Molto Mario Batali, Iron Chef, Iconoclast, and Restauranteur extrordinaire’s newest foodie-haven is finally opening its doors. Del Posto, a fancy traditional family style restaurant, is not officially open to the public, but the first reports are coming in. A few weeks back, Frank Bruni gave his sneak peak:

EXPECT $240 rack of veal, $220 shoulder of pork and a $200 whole king salmon for four to eight people, to be carved within view of the table, in a flourish of high ceremony from the Old World.

He also talked to some of the Del Posto owners to get their takes:

“I hate to use the word fancy and I hate to use the word luxury, but it’s going to be a fancy luxury restaurant,” said one of the owners, who often fills his restaurants with hard rock and whose tastes usually seem no fancier than his footwear: orange clogs and orange sneakers, night after night and pair upon pair. “The last thing I want is the lemmings in their Chanel miniskirts waiting three deep at the bar to have a cosmopolitan.”

Ah, but what have the initial reports revealed? Eater, a New York estaurant blog, has had excellent coverage of DP’s progress.

A Chowhound contributer was lucky enough to have a meal. Food? Great but not Amazing. The decor? Beautiful. The bathroom situation? Troubling.

Mmm, here’s to hoping that a restaurant that big won’t have a three month wait list for reservations.
